"Levitra is the most commonly prescribed, but that's not what has driven the price of drug," says Dr. Eric Kandel, a psychiatrist and professor of neurobiology who serves as the chairman of Department Psychiatry at The Rockefeller University.

"It's so often prescribed—and you have one pill for 10 years," explains Gilda Deutsch, a psychiatrist at the NYU Langone Medical Center and a board-certified internist at Weill Cornell Medical College. "It's become such a big problem. You have children, grandchildren, people in their 90s and you're still taking it."
Kandel agrees that many patients may not know the true cost of taking Levitra. He says physicians and pharmacists might not explain why they are prescribed the medication in first place.
For example, he says many patients will go into a doctor's waiting room but won't ask why they have to bring a prescription the doctor. They may think conversation is about a medication they'll need to fill or a doctor's office, but the conversation often goes in a different direction.
Patients may also be hesitant to ask their doctor or pharmacy about generic Levitra because they don't understand why the generic drug costs less than the brand.
